We are only able to pay benefits to Scheme members and their dependants. As a result, we carry out monthly checks on our pensioner records to make sure that we are only paying pensions to individuals who are entitled to receive a pension from the Scheme. We do this by checking details against the UK death registers.
The Scheme does have a number of pensioners who live overseas for whom we are unable to carry out these checks. Instead, we carry out manual checks on a random sample of our overseas pensioners on a yearly basis. This year this check is carried out by ITM via biometric screening.
If you live overseas and receive a letter please make sure you follow the procedure detailed in the letter and the FAQ document.
If you receive a letter but are not capable of following the procedure, for example, it you are incapacitated/in a care home/hospitalised then please contact us straight away to let us know. We can be contacted on bcsss.enquiries@coal-pension.org.uk or on 0114 2536444.
This is a genuine exercise conducted by the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme. If you have any concerns about pension scams, please contact us for reassurance using the details above.
