25 July 2025

The BCSSS Trustees met with Sarah Jones MP, the minister responsible for the Scheme, to discuss the transfer of the investment reserve to members. Trustees attending were Chair Cheryl Agius, James Grant and Bleddyn Hancock.

The Trustees described the meeting, which took place on 22 July, as positive. The Minister has made a recommendation about transferring the investment reserve to members, which she has sent to HM Treasury. However, the Minister cannot share further details until HM Treasury agrees to the proposal.

The Minister's team and the Trustees' support team will work together this summer to prepare for a possible transfer. Darren Jones MP, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, is now responsible for approving the decision. The Trustees expect a decision around the time of the Autumn Statement in late October.

The Trustees also wrote to Darren Jones on 21 July. They told him about a Parliamentary event in early July where Trustees and members met over 50 MPs and their staff. The event, hosted by Grahame Morris MP, gave them the chance to update parliamentarians about the Trustees' proposals for the investment reserve. Read more about the Trustees’ proposals here.

The Trustees' letter made clear that the BCSSS is financially strong and well-run. They asked Darren Jones to settle this issue once and for all by transferring the whole investment reserve to members.

The Trustees will continue to meet local MPs and members across the country this summer. We will update members when we have more news.

How you can help

The government still needs to hear your voice. Please consider writing or emailing Darren Jones MP (Chief Secretary to the Treasury). Remember to copy in your own local MP, asking for equal treatment for BCSSS members and the transfer of the whole of the investment reserve to members.

If you think your local MP should be meeting with the Trustees for an update on the BCSSS, let them know by writing to them.
